Site Sentry Sets Its Sights on Continued Growth After Winning Small Business of the Year

Site Sentry, a leader in security and technology, was named Small Business of the Year at the WA Business Awards 2024 (formerly RISE), as the company looks toward an ambitious growth strategy.

Founded ten years ago to address increasing security needs on construction sites, Site Sentry has expanded its offerings to serve high-profile events, including securing Sydney’s iconic New Year’s Eve fireworks — Australia’s largest annual event.

The Bibra Lake-based company was founded by directors Jason Nuttman and Paul McKiernan, who brought together their combined expertise in renewable energy and construction.

“We recognized a gap in the market for a comprehensive site security solution, especially for construction,” Mr Nuttman explained. “Paul had seen firsthand the damage and theft that occurred on his family’s roofing business sites, and that’s where Site Sentry was born.”

The company specializes in designing, manufacturing, and renting out solar-powered security towers, equipped with cutting-edge CCTV systems, automated alarms, and a suite of features including LED lights, sirens, and voice challenges to deter intruders.

When starting, Site Sentry faced financial hurdles, with the founders funding the business themselves while working full-time jobs. “Banks wouldn’t back us because we were creating a product from scratch, not buying off the shelf,” Mr Nuttman recalls. “We kept going, doing the work during nights and weekends until we could go full-time.”

Now with a growing team of 13, Site Sentry is expanding both into the eastern states and by increasing the size of its Perth factory. Major clients include top commercial builders Multiplex, Laing O’Rourke, John Holland, and Built, as well as resource giants like Chevron, Mineral Resources, and Roy Hill.

A landmark achievement for the company came with securing its first NSW client — the Sydney Opera House, which has contracted Site Sentry to provide security for the New Year’s Eve fireworks display.

The directors have also launched Fortawall, a sister company that won Startup Business of the Year, further expanding their portfolio.

As Site Sentry continues to grow, it remains committed to providing innovative security solutions to meet the evolving needs of construction sites, high-profile events, and beyond.
